A Battle the President Can't Win

Today in the Wall Street Journal an article written by in Peggy Noonan is one of the best perspectives we've see on the issue relating to Catholics and the HHS mandate. Below is the article and can also be read in full at the Wall Street Journal online

What a faux pas, how inept, how removed from the essential realities of America. Yes, I'm referring to President Obama. But let's do Mitt Romney first.

He's taken heavy fire for his interview with CNN's Soledad O'Brien, in which he said, "I'm not concerned about the very poor."

Every criticism has been true. It was politically inept, playing into stereotypes about Republicans and about his own candidacy. It was Martian-like in its seeming remove from the concerns of everyday citizens. We're in a recession here! It was at odds both with longtime American tradition and with rising conservative concern over the growth and changing nature of what used to be called the underclass. READ MORE...

BRAVO! WELL PUT! I believe Newt is the best person to be our next president because he's the only one who sounds like he knows specifically what to do when, and his history, while disturbing to some, has prepared him for this presidency-at this time-in a way that none of the other candidates, desirables or hopefuls can match. People need to look beyond their distaste, and realize Newt's uniqueness for this time in our history. He has lived a life that has prepared him for this. Romney and Santorum are children by comparison, and Dr. Paul is the only other candidate even close to Newt's qualifications and experience.
  • Jeannene Moore 04 Feb

Yes we must replace Obama, however I don't feel that Romney is the one to take him out. In my heart I truly hope that Rick Santorum can get ahead of the group and go on to win the presidency.  He is a man of honor (missing in other candidates), a true fighter for the good of our nation.  We need his leadership.
  • Mike Bryant 04 Feb

I agree Jeannene! Well said. I to believe Rick Santorum is the man we need ,but for what ever reason he just does not get a second look! I also don't believe Romney can win and that Newt is a better choice simply because Romney is more like Obama than I care to compare! If we look back to history we will see the direct reason our country started to fall. When we started loosing our moral foundation set in place by the founding fathers it all started to take  a nose dive. If you believe in God or not there must be a moral foundation we can all agree on or we have distruction of our country as we know it. Is it not obvious how we got to this point? Alot of people see the immoral thing of this world as normal and the moral beliefs as abnormal! I've heard this somewhere before; oh yes the Bible!

This is the most rational and acurate account yet. I am so happy tohave a place were the constitution and morals and true Christian values are a part of our lives not just some fuzzy Sunday thing. We surly need prayers and awakening of true Christians in this country before we lose all of our Religious freedom

  • Pastor Cal/AFLC 04 Feb

Well written Peggy, and we pray God you are right. Meanwhile voters: vote for the best Christian candidate on your ballot. If eventually there is none, vote for the candidate who best will serve Christian values... saved or not.

What we need is not a President. On the federal level, we need people in CONGRESS who will make any President irrelevant, by passing only strictly Constitutional legislation, and defunding all agencies that currently trespass those boundaries.

On the state level, we need legislators (in every state house and senate) who will stand on their legal ground as legal and God-ordained representatives to protect the citizens within their jurisdiction; to say NO to every federal usurpation.

In states where there is not enough broad agreement, counties serve the purpose of the "lesser magistrate" that legally resists and opposes every unlawful (unconstitutional) attempt to use position and power over legal authority.

And in our own voluntary, contractual business dealings, we need to make the fiat currency (which steals from us by inflating away its value at the whims of the FED chair and FOMC and those they represent) IRRELEVANT. We can do this by voluntarily trading in real money that cannot be inflated away. Put savings and capital in hard currency, and trade in these terms. Let Federal Reserve Notes fall into disuse. Use this calculator to get "dollar" prices in fractional coin amounts: www.SilverAndGoldAreMoney.com. And sign up for a free Holding here, from which you can trade back into currencies if needed, but which keeps you from losing during the hyperinflation: http://www.goldmoney.com?gmrefcode=soundeco

Thinking the government has a solution is a major part of the problem. Take stock, and act.

Peggy Noonan is right on!  I hope this issue unifies all Christians and we all stand up with courage for what we believe in.  Obama's goal is to make us into a secular society with power in the presidency and support from big corporations.  He wants to ram his agenda down our throats just like he did with Obamacare, and he does by appointing all of his czars which are not accountable to Congress.  It's about time that we all stand up against him, fight for our freedoms and return to the essence of a democracy and the free enterprise system.  We need to be on our knees before God and VOTE.  Too many elections have gone wrong because Christians don't get involved in politics.  Lord, forgive us.
  • Tamquam 04 Feb

This seems to be the logical consequence to a pursuit of power that will brook no rivals.  "Nice kneecaps you got there.  It would really be a shame if anything should happen to them if you're not on the ideological bandwagon."
  • SleepyEyeSarah 04 Feb

Please send a message to your elected officials in Washington, D.C. requesting that the Federal Government not force religious institutions to violate their consciences. I did - it was quick and easy at http://nchla.org/action.asp.

I'm addressing the first part of this post:

As expected, Romney takes fire over his comment about the poor. An isolated comment, void of context now forms the basis for criticism. This is to be expected from the liberal media and those who oppose of anything conservative. But for Christians to jump on that bandwagon and whip Mr. Romney over a statement taken out of context is nigh unforgiveable. Look at what Romney really said (and he said it at least twice). The poor are not where the focus needs to be to benefit America and Americans! To benefit all Americans, the middle class must be able to get back to work, they must be able to produce instead of sitting on the sidelines watching. And if we can get the middle class back to productive contribution, it will benefit all Americans, not the least, the poor.

Get with it already! Enough of the "politically correct" phraseology which in the end is meaningless. It time for a leader to speak up and for thoughtful Americans to listen.

I think he believes after the Notre Dame commencement he was invited to that the Catholic vote is serverely splintered and he can dictate terms and ultimaately weather the storm. And his Catholic Cathly Sebelius and VP Biden can stand up and take most of the criticism. The worst that can happen is he'll get some flak now, some bills will be introduced to mitigate the administration's aims, and he will come out and say it was all a big misunderstanding and we're all friends now....just in time for the convention and election in the fall when he will remind the left that he's "fighting against Wall Street and rich people not paying enough and for the poor and middle class." I think I have that right....
  • Ray 07 Feb

Whatever the concerns about the bill, I have a problem with saying that it is about "abortion" inducing drugs without being clear that you are not using the standard medical definition of abortion.  Abortion is the termination of pregnancy which starts at successful implantation and is measured by the kick-in of the hormones to cause the woman's body to provide for the growing fetus.  I recognize that Catholics and many evangelicals see the fertilized egg as fully human and worthy of full protection. I do not want to dishonor that stand, but I think is wrong and misleading to not make it clear.  Not every Christian considers the prevention of implantation to be murder and morally equivalent to abortion of say a viable infant in the womb.  The administration did take care to excludes drugs such as RU486, etc.  That definitely is an abortofacient.  The birth control pill is not classically an abortofacient and even some Bible believing gynecologists have questioned the validity of the concern about preventing implantation.  As it is, I think the current wording of critique is a bit dishonest even if good Catholics and evangelicals in the know may understand what you are saying, there are many who would not.
  • haazaleyez 07 Feb

Catholics have always been prolife, who does he think he is to demand such a mandate, Mr. Obama will not win this one.  Freedom 0f religion is our right, People we must take a stand now.
Without the Catholic vote he cannot be re-elected.  I agree with Peggy Noonan.
  • Theresa Gratton 07 Feb

God Bless America....and God will re-bless America...if we all stand for our beliefs and especially we are citizens of this once blessed Country.
  • Theresa Gratton 07 Feb

God gives Life and God takes Life.......no one should every try otherwise.
It is the most precious gift that was given to all of us. Get these diabolical people out of
Washington and pray that we for once get someone who is truly genuine.

My God do we need this. Let us all pray for each other.
  • Ken Fountain 08 Feb

We need to GROO (get rid of Obama and his pagan buddies.)
  • Trudy Byron 08 Feb

We need to get rid of  Obama and all his crooked people. Stand together in prayer that God will turn this country around to being America as it use to be and should be.
  • Jeannine 08 Feb

We Catholics/Christians need to not only state our beliefs and outrage at Mr. Obama's disregard of our rights, and such as the first Amendment, but unite in prayer and fasting  to stomp on this satan. We shall overcome!
  • Melanie Hutchinson 08 Feb

I believe that a Catholic Hospital or other religious institution should not be forced against their moral convictions to support the use or sale of contraception.  This is not our freedom of the first amendment and should not be tolerated.
  • carlene 09 Feb

I truly believe we need to replace Obama, he has no idea what this country needs because he comes from a society of people who have no moral's for themselves or others.  We has christians must not need but must ban together or we will not be able to read the Bible before long we will be reading the coran and yes we must ban together and pray but with pray comes doing and we must react now or never.
  • Margaret Head 09 Feb

All Christians have to fight for our religious freedom.  This administration is taking one freedom away at a  time.  If we continue to let this happen we will be a third world country.  We broke from countries that allowed this to  happen to have our freedom.  Prayer is our greatest sword to fight this war, and the courage to speak out against the work of the devil himself.
  • Tracy 09 Feb

Really Carlene, and what "society" would that be that Obama comes from???  Black, half-black, Democratic, or the LIE that you "Christians" like to spread about him being Muslim??? Just curious...I guess because of your reference to the Coran, then you are spreading your ridiculous LIE about him being a muslim....that is pretty pathetic when you can come to a site, that is suppose to be a Christian site and you out and out lie about the President of the United States just to push you own agenda...I find you appalling to say the least..Also some of you may want to do your research as to when this mandate was actually put into effect regarding birth control and the catholic church...this was done under President Bushes...

In December 2000, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled that companies that provided prescription drugs to their employees but didn't provide birth control were in violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prevents discrimination on the basis of sex. That opinion, which the George W. Bush administration did nothing to alter or withdraw when it took office the next month, is still in effect today—and because it relies on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, it applies to all employers with 15 or more employees. Employers that don't offer prescription coverage or don't offer insurance at all are exempt, because they treat men and women equally—but under the EEOC's interpretation of the law, you can't offer other preventative care coverage without offering birth control coverage, too.
  • Tracy 09 Feb

it's so funny that when a President from your party does nothing to prevent this ruling, nothing is said...but when a Democratic President upholds what Bush's administration did nothing about, then it is fair game on the Democrats...whats the word that comes to mind here...oh yeah, HYPOCRISY!!!
